SLEEP NEEDS BY AGE

According to the American Sleep Association, the amount of sleep people need varies by age. Here's a breakdown of sleep needs by age.

  • Newborns: babies will sleep about 16-18 hours a day, sleeping more during the day and less at night.

  • Infants (1st year): require 14.5 to 16.5 hours a day with at least two naps a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each lasting from one to three hours.

  • Toddlers (2-3 years): 10 to 12 hours per night; 1 to 2 hours per day

  • Pre-Schoolers (4-5 years): will sleep 10-12 hours; some napping during the day, while others will resist naps all together.

  • Children ages 7 to 12: 9 to 10.5 hours per night

  • Teen-agers: 8 to 9.5 hours per night

  • Adults: 7 to 8.5 hours per night

  • Older adults: 6.5 hours per night; 1-hour nap.
